  • Red Ombre Hair for Chinese New Year?

    1.18.2014

on my wish list last year - the ombre hair

Today I am going to talk about the one best thing that happened to my hair last year, which was like forever on my wish list but I never got the balls to do it. I have seen many bloggers do the ombre or dip dye hair and went googling to find out what kind of styles or colors would suit me. You can say I never did muster the courage to do it because I didn't know if I could pull the look off. I also don't want people in Malaysia looking at me "one kind" while I go about shopping.

Spotted on runaway models, celebs and fashionistas, the ombre hair color can be quite an attention getter if you go for the pastel or fashion colors (red, pink, green, blue, yellow). A more natural look would to go for earthy colors such as earth tones or browns (colors last longer as well). Fashion colors don't last as long but it's a great way to celebrate a theme / occasion / festivity for that month.

Normally ombre hair colors is done from dark roots to gradually a lighter shade. It uses at least 3 tones to bring out the beautiful layers of colors. However take caution, one would need to bleach their hair depending on the colors chosen!.

I thought I'll show you a pic of a cake with gradient colors to illustrate what ombre hair coloring is about. Notice the gradual color tones in the layers of the cake, they compliment one another. I find that really magical, whimsical and cute.

irresistible "ombre" cakes thanks to rainbow cake popularity

now this is "ombre" hair! see the colors used?

this is my eye candy, I smile happy when I see pink

    crazy or fabulous?
(the Asian girl is having a purple-pink half tone)

stay safe with browns or ash colors

As you can see from the pictures the brighter more fun colors would be harder to pull off if you're working in an industry that requires you to look presentable or professional. It also depends on your personality, your fashion style or overall look. Not everyone can pull off the pink-purple ombre so always ask your hair stylists if it's suitable for you!

In America, the ombre browns and blonds is widely use where else in Asian parts of the world, young girls are going for the fun and colorful styles. For me, I was in a dilemma because I didn't know what would suit me. I thought of going for the safer option (browns) but hey deep down I really want to try a nice pink or red ombre for a change.

SO when a friend who recently opened his salon, The Loft Hairdressing at Sungei Wang, Kuala Lumpur asked if I wanted to do it, I said "Hey why not? Let's balls up and do this!".

a New York inspired hair salon in the city

    American culture based hair concept
which is easy maintenance and as well as trendy

The location of the hair salon was in Sungei Wang Plaza. My first impression was la la mui shop? No offense, it's just that I thought Sungei Wang Plaza is the place for Jpop, Kpop, or Asian trend inspired fashion outlets and never in my mind would I expect a New York inspired Redken hair salon that really looks like a urbanized metropolitan salon. This only reminds me of SEX AND THE CITY!

say no more, I'm coming here for sure

AND the three guys behind The Loft Hairdressing? Don't play play, they're not any ordinary hair stylists out there. They are three (really cute) guys who are Redken Masters! Graduated from Redken Fifth Ave NYC Academy getting certified as Redken Specialist, Redken Master Specialist, Redken Certified Haircolorist. Meet Emil Khor 18 years experience (previously Toni & Guy hairdressing Director), Leong Chi Wai 9 years experience and also a graduate of Vidal Sassoon student from London, United Kingdom and lastly Kelvin Chee 6 years experience on fashion backstage, styled for celebrities, and recently did a presentation for MODA 2013 fashion show.

can you recognize who she is? It's Arisa Chow
(my kawan blogger who is also a cosplayer)

love this pink dreamy ombre on Audrey Loke

I never felt so confident to go ahead with this after talking to Chi Wai and Kevin. They convinced me that I am in good hands (I'll kill them if not!). Thanks to Caroline another blogger friend who introduced me to them otherwise I wouldn't have met these awesome hairstylists who wear formal (macam tuxedo je) at work! I arrange for a makeover session for my Butterfly Project team to be the first bloggers group to review The Loft Hairdressing. Each one of us will be given a hair coloring makeover either ombre or hair coloring, hair treatment and hair cut.

The surprise? We gave our profile pictures much earlier before going for our appointment so we don't know what's in store for us until it's done! Call that exciting haha. Kinda like America's Next Top Model hair makeovers, I hope no one cries!

You've been warned! Lots pictures here and selfies haha. We were assigned to a hairstylist each so I got Emil Khor while Illy has Kevin and Caroline was under the care of Chi Wai. Some picture look really funny too, check out below haha.

we laugh so much on that day because we don't know what's in store for us

this is me before the hair makeover, I choose to do ombre :)
(but don't know what color haha)

Emil Khor, he's the hair sifu in charge of making me over

he told me he's doing something red so I have to bleach my hair
(otherwise the beautiful colors don't show)

suddenly so quiet, so I sneak a peek at Caro & Illy

am I getting some orange ombre?! *panic*
(this is the Redken Chromatics Zero Ammonia 4D Colors)

oh no it really does look orange, no no no!
(I didn't smell any ammonia smell during the coloring awesome)

after washing, I could see it's red not orange *phew*

after another wash, I was given a hair treatment
using Redken Chemistry range to condition & treat my hair

the Redken Chemistry treatment can be customized
to suit the damage hair needs

check out my finish makeover! It's red ombre oh la la!

It took more than 5 hours to complete my hair makeover experience. I didn't think it's that long because when I was 16 years old, I waited 4 hours to have my hair straightened. Emil cut my hair too so that the end result would be perfect. To sum up the important parts of getting one's hair "OMBRE-fied" here's what I went through:

    1. bleach my hair (so the colors will show)
    2. color my hair (3 colors were used: base, middle and ends)
    3. treat my hair (nourish back my chemically treated hair)

Of course, I was really fortunate to get my hair colored using the Redken Chromatics Zero Ammnonia 4D Colors. It didn't sting my eyes or give out a strong ammonia smell. My scalp is pretty sensitive so during the hair coloring, I didn't feel a thing! Emil said it was a safer option of hair coloring and would not damage my hair as severely compared to normal DIY Hair coloring at home. Though the bleaching part, my hair is definitely damaged. A price to pay for fashion!

To treat our damage hair after bleaching and coloring, we were given a hair treatment using the Redken Chemistry range. I would come back for this treatment again because I believe my hair could have been so much drier and frizzier if not because of this essential step!

For the Chemistry ( Treatment ):
    Scalp Treatment - RM99
    Cleansing treatment - RM35 - RM55
    3 Step Redken Chemistry System - RM109 - RM209
    Full Step Redken Chemistry System - RM139 - RM259

I selfie for 3 days with my new hair color!

Why did I need to wait 2 years to do a ombre! Gosh. It was just so much fun walking around the shopping malls in my new hair color. It wasn't pink or flashy which I thank The Loft Hairdressing for choosing such a fabulous color to suit my personality. I though only pretty chicks can pull off the ombre hair look but I was wrong! Even a normal girl like me can pull this look with or without make up. Don't even need to change my wardrobe because the color they choose for me just rocks whatever I do. It's grudgy and edgy!

my before, during and after selfies on instagram
see me tak habis habis selfie haha!

    What I like:
That I have finally had the courage to go for ombre hair and it turns out to be awesome, a nice dark red to pinkish red ends. Love it so much! My fiance and friends said it look good on me. I feel so sexy at one point when I selfie myself. My hair was damaged during bleaching but thanks to Redken Chemistry which locks nutrients into my hair back the damage wasn't as severe as I thought it woud be (grass dead hair). It was also thanks to using zero ammonia hair coloring product (ammonia can damaged hair and scalp).

I also like the fact that guy guys wearing black and white formal wear made me feel like I have the best service in town (ops).

    What I didn't like:

The colors used are called fashion colors (red, pink) so the effects didn't stay longer than 2 weeks. Chi Wai said it could last 10 washes but I can't stand not washing my hair. So in about a month, my reddish pink ombre faded to a brown blond which I see in a positive way, that's another color for me to rock!. Doing ombre hair is expensive since more than 1 hair coloring service is needed for the process. It's something you can splurge on and if you have the money, you probably can change colors every month! My hair makeover roughly costs RM500 (hair wash, cut, treat, bleach & color) so depending on your hair length, whether you need to bleach it and the colors needed, do a consultation first to find out how much it will cost you.

Hair damage is unavoidable so treating, condition and using the right hair product to maintain and care for your hair is really important. Nobody likes damage hair right? so consider this before going for an ombre or hair coloring that requires you to bleach you hair.

Thanks to The Loft Hairdressing who gave us all a hair makeover and an experience to try something exciting and fun like the ombre hair! Check out Illy's blog and Caroline's blog to see the results of their hair makeover experience at The Loft Hairdressing!
