    An Incurable Passion

in the age of social media, everyone is quick to judge

It's been a while since I write about myself. Life's busy as usual, I finally figure out what I want to do in life and what are my strengths and weaknesses. Working in Althea, managing the Butterfly Project beauty community, myself, friends and family. You can see the priority in which these are laid now. I devote myself to work every day, it's not just a 9 - 5 job. Even as a community founder, I'm constantly juggling the work regardless of time.

Everyone seems to think my work as a community founder is easy. A piece of advice, what you don't see, don't understand, does not make up even 10% of what you think it is. Is it definitely common to be in the spot of a conundrum that I am in?

I try to keep how the community actually works low profile. There are no standard procedures that apply to all who collaborate with us. It always changes - for a reason. While many communities, companies, agencies, firms, people out there trying to replicate Butterfly Project, they have one thing they can't replicate, which is the heart.

And sure, while I'm not very verbal about things (on a personal level), you definitely know I am a person who would not jump into conclusions and make a judgment on anyone without assessment. A community founder is always on an equal, fair stand and who thinks twice about every action she does or says. She's lonely but she is happy.

Everything she does is to put the community forward first, everyone is equal. No one is more important than another. The community is a whole, and not a person, a place, nor an action. It is not an act of selfishness.

I am happy doing the things I do, even when I am in pain and the disease I have is incurable.

EU Dairy Company Launches Healthy & Nutritious Cream Products in Malaysia

    11.21.2019

Lakeland Dairies brand products on display including Millac & Millac Gold Cream

A lot of attention and awareness has been focused on living a more healthy lifestyle and diet over the past few years. Increasing numbers of people are becoming more health-conscious and searching for increased knowledge and options for healthy nutritious meals. Healthy doesn't necessarily have to mean bland and unappetizing, there are tasty options available, which I'll tell you all about now.

Recently, I attended a Cream of Ireland event organized by Lakeland Dairies, as part of EU Dairy Naturally UK Product Launch @ Majestic Hotel, KL. As a Northern Irishman, born and raised there for most of my life, I was excited to be at an event in Malaysia that involved homegrown Irish products, especially dairy which I love and find are much tastier and of a higher quality than the foreign dairy products that are available here. (I'm biased I know!) Did you know that Malaysia has the highest dairy consumption per head in all of Asia?!

The Dairy Council for Northern Ireland is an organization established to promote the consumption of UK dairy products and advocate their health benefits, whilst also giving your tastebuds a treat! The dairy products are produced to the high standards of the European Union (EU), promising to deliver products with the best quality possible. All dairy farms are registered and milk processing plants are approved by relevant local enforcement authority on behalf of the Food Standards Agency (FSA) Comprehensive inspection programs are carried out on a regular basis to ensure all quality and food safety standards are met.

Finding Ireland on the world map with a magnifying glass

Grass Fed Cows roaming free on a N.Ireland farm field

In addition to regulatory requirements, the weather and landscape of Ireland mean lush green grass is grown and from this high-quality feed, milk is produced and manufactured into high-quality nutritious products.

A popular brand under the Dairy Council for Northern Ireland is Lakeland Dairies. It's Asia Regional Manager, Richard McDonnell was at the event to give a welcome speech explaining more about his company, the dairy industry in Ireland & UK and it's relationship with the Malaysian dairy industry. Richard explained that Lakeland Dairies is a 120-year-old high-quality dairy co-operative, and actually, their products have been available to buy in Malaysia for over 30 years, and are used by many famous food manufacturers (Locally Pok Brothers) and service outlets throughout the country and over 80 countries around the world. He also introduced their own famous brands Millac and Millac Gold, which are high quality and flexible creams suitable for all kinds of dishes, which you can buy in supermarkets here in Malaysia. Recently Lakeland Dairies have been creating tasty desserts and sauces for pasta using local Asian flavours, which have been creating excitement among their customers. All of their milk and dairy products are sourced from Grass Fed Cows, which is proven to be very nutritious and an important part of daily nutrition intake.

I discovered when chatting to him later that he's from a small fishing town not far from where I grew up! It's a small world sometimes! Being so far away from home, it was nice to hear a familiar accent again.

After Richard's speech, we were treated to an exquisite culinary treat and gastronomy experience by local Celebrity Chef Dato Fazley Yaakob. He utilized Millac cream combined with meringue shells, mixed berries, figs, mixed fruit purée and fruit powders to create a work of dessert art on a table, producing an eyecatching and Instagrammable Eton Mess/Pavlova style. Visually so bright and colorful, that you immediately eat with your eyes 1st before your mouth! I dug in and tasted it soon after. It was so delicious bursting with flavor with the fresh fruit and cream. I couldn't stop eating!

Bite-size refreshments you can try making at home using Millac Cream

A big thanks to Lakeland Dairies for inviting me to the event and experiencing a taste of home after so long. I just want to share that during the event, there were refreshments served, including Crème Brûlée and Salmon & Cream Tart. The interesting part is they were all made using Millac Cream. They looked and also tasted amazing, like fine dining cuisine. So very happy to be able to witness such a launch. I felt lucky to be part of an exquisite culinary experience, which many other people have to pay a lot of money for in an expensive fine dining restaurant.

Make sure to try out Lakeland Dairies products for yourself. You can find Millac products at leading supermarkets such as Jaya Grocer, Village Grocer & Ben's Independent Grocer (B.I.G).

    Leekaja Cinderella Treatment Review

    11.19.2019

Leekaja is one of Korea's top salons

Leekaja's Signature Cinderella Treatment was on my frizz radar since I discovered them on Instagram last year. Not only does the name spark that fairy tale makeover I needed but I actually got to know about the popular Hair Botox as they called it when I was in Seoul, Korea two years back. I remember myself innocently trying to understand the posters at the salon but only could be amazed at the Cinderella word and the before and after photographs.

    Leekaja's Signature Cinderella Treatment

If you have been following me, you know that I am plagued with frizzy, unruly hair since my teenage years and I have tried almost every Keratin treatment in Malaysia (except for Cinderella until now). I've done hair straightening, rebonding, relaxer, Brazillian Keratin Treatment (BKT), Keratin Treatments, Platinum Keratin Treatment, Steam Pods, etc I can't keep count anymore but in my heart, I was dead set on trying the Cinderella Treatment at Leekaja Beauty Salon which is a one-stop all-in-one beauty salon providing not just hair services, but facial, eyelash, nail, men's barber services as well as a cafe serving Korean flower tea in their menu.

Have you heard of Botox treatment for hair? Using organic ingredients like aloe vera, vitamins, and collagen, Cinderella Treatment will moisturize and nourish your hair, achieving soft and smooth locks without resorting to chemical treatments such as rebonding. A sensational treatment that is already famous in Korea, there is no one who did not return for the treatment.

If you take a peep at their Instagram, you're going to be amazed at their Instagrammable interior! It's like an urban jungle just pop up in the middle of the city. To be precise at the Four Season's Robinson, Jalan Ampang (just next to KLCC). To get there, look for Maxis building and you can cross over to Four Seasons Place.

this is the new section of Leekaja

fresh, green, luscious urban jungle in a modern setting

Curious about the name? Leekaja is actually founded by Madame Leekaja back in 1972 in South Korea and was the first salon franchised brand that has set itself apart. If you ever pass by their salon in Robinsons, Four Seasons, you'll know they're dead stylish and "atas". With over 200 shops in Korea alone, they're also available in the USA, China, Australia, Singapore, and Malaysia!

"Atas" does come with a price and also it's the line of services to make you feel like a queen.

Been wanting to try @leekaja.my & then last week, I saw they were giving away their signature Korean Hair Cream Bath so I joined and boy did I get lucky! Won myself a RM290 hair treatment yipeee 🤩 I won & hopped over to Robinson’s Four Season to find them. It’s a jungle looking salon thats refreshing and bold. They have their own cafe too ☕️ Upon being seated, I was given a menu to select my choice of drink (coffee/tea) with pastry and a banana. Oh wow! 🍵🍌🥐 While having my hair washed, I looked up and saw a ceiling of more jungle lush plants (not sure if it’s real?) 🌿 I like how they’re so gentle to the hair, no tugging no obscene pulling and combing. That’s so different from all the salons I’ve been. I’ve been having my hair falling so I was worried about losing more hair to nonsensical hands going about my head. Yeap, that’s one lesson I learnt from keto & intermitten fasting. U better take your supplements & biotin! 😏 Thank you Leekaja for letting me experience what’s it like having a Korean Cream Bath in your lovely lush salon 🥺 #plusizekitten #koreancreambath #ketotammy #leekaja #leekajamy #koreanhairsalon #robinsonsmalaysia #fourseasonsmalaysia
A post shared by Plusizekitten @ Tammy Lim (@hellotammylim) on

I participated in one of their Instagram contest a few months ago and won their Korean Cream Bath Hair Treatment and had the first Leekaja experience that impressed me as a consumer. Their welcome service was excellent and they offered me a welcome snack with a choice of drinks from their cafe. I could choose from their cold-pressed juices, tea or freshly brewed coffee. It came with a coffee bean-shaped waffle and a tasty banana (for energy?).

Their leather seats were comfortable, I could enjoy the free wifi, phone charge (you know that's always a big problem!) and look decently covered in a nice salon treatment gown (IDK about you but it does make you feel so much better especially when you need to take a step out of the salon to the bathroom or for fresh air).

P.S: Apparently the treatment gown is one-time use only! For hygiene purposes (omg loving this salon's attention to details).

The service that set them apart, or at least for my visit, was then I was in a strict Keto and had lost a lot of weight, including my hair (refer to my weight loss post). I was so worried about my hair being pulled, mangled, and comb because that's usually what I experience at other salons. There's like this conspiracy going on where they kind of make you beautiful but also destroy your hair in the end. High heat, rough handling, and combing of your hair like it's some kind of pony. Have you experienced that?

Surprisingly, here, they were so gentle with my hair! They weren't pulling it, they were treating it with utmost care like they know my hair's so fragile at the moment.

That made the deciding factor if I would come back again.

    Seriously

behold the before & after of my damaged, frizzy hair

Ok, let's get down to the very reason for my post today. It's the Cinderella treatment. The most coveted hair treatment in town that if you have the money to splurge, should at least once, try it.

Quoting their shampoo area with the neon quotes "Believe me if I looked good, it's not an accident". I'm going to interpret it as nobody looks good without doing anything. The Cinderella Treatment isn't just any hair treatment. It's the perfect anti-frizz solution for frizzy, dull, uncontrollable, damaged hair from chemical services (coloring/perming). Turning back the clock on your unruliness, to rejuvenate, strengthen, and revive your hair.

    Cinderella Treatment Key Benefits:
    • Achieve Easy-to-Manage Hair
    • Attain Straight and Smooth Hair
    • Organic Products used to minimize damage
    • Possible to achieve straightening effects on bleached hair

Especially when they have promotions because the must-try treatment costs anywhere from RM600 to RM1500 depending on your hair length. This makes it the most expensive keratin treatment I have ever gotten in my Malaysian life.

This comes with a reason,  not only are they a premium beauty salon with value-added services, they use the latest haircare tech and gears like Dyson hairdryer (you know your locks are getting some good stuff). The treatment also uses organic ingredients such as aloe vera, vitamins, and collagen.

It's the hair botox without all the harsh nasty stuff and I can attest to it in my review.

    The Cinderella Treatment Process

bleached, frizzy, damaged, loss of shine, untamed

After being seated, my hairstylist Shane inspected my hair and checked with me my hair history so he could advise me if the Cinderella Treatment was suitable. He notices that I have many baby hairs due to my hair regrowing back after my keto hair loss. He said it might not be advisable as the treatment would not last as long, but I was willing to take the plunge. I just couldn't wait anymore for my Cinderella makeover. I also couldn't stand my lion hair and needed to look good until my birthday in January.

I did all my research before coming here so I knew what would go on with the steps. I anticipated the whole treatment for my hair length to be at least 2hours on average. To watch the entire process, check out my IGTV above! Below is a photo step-by-step of my experience.

    step 1 - hair wash & rinse
so relaxing! I was enjoying the head massage

step 2 - treatment cream application
I read that one of the ingredients onion can make you cry so there's an eye protector for me
my head was wrapped to marinate the treatment cream

    step 3 - warm for 15mins
I was amazed at the "spaceship" looking warmer haha
at this point, I did not feel any irritation/strong chemical smell
very good, as I usually feel the "product" at this stage

    step 4 - blow drying
it's quite a scene watching two cute guys blow drying my hair
using Dyson of all hairdryers! first-class service IMHO

step 5 - ironing to seal the Cinderella cream
I can already see my hair transformed here, I was so happy
Christmas came early for me, I'm going to be a princess soon!

    step 6 - rinse & blow-dry again
I get to enjoy the hair wash again + the last Dyson session haha

    step 7 - hair cut & styling
Shane trimmed my hair to suit my new Cinderella look
I requested for my bangs to be corrected from him

It's pretty much the standard straightening/BKT process where you'll need to first wash your hair to remove residues and oils before your treatment (a clean start / fresh slate). I truly enjoyed my time in the shampoo area with a relaxing head and scalp acupressure massage. When I open my eyes, the gaze of flowers welcomes me. I feel so peaceful and relaxed. If they put essential oils aromatherapy for my face to inhale I think that's going to be fabulous!

I was usher back to my seat where my yummy treats were waiting for me. I pour my green tea and took a bite onto my coffee bean-shaped waffle (so cute). Shane my hairstylist came to lightly blow dry my hair. Then the most interesting thing happened, he started sticking this plastic screen over my eyes to protect my eyes from the cream. I read online that one of the ingredients is onion and it makes you cry so this was to protect me from crying haha!

Usually, I could smell the strong application cream (from other treatments) and while the technology has advanced to removing formaldehyde from BKT, I could still smell the strong creams used on my hair. While I do not know in-depth the makeup of this Cinderella cream, I know that it is 90% organic and uses collagen, aloe vera, cedarwood oil, pomegranate, and green tea extracts from online reviews. This may explain that I did not pick up on any of the strong smell nor did I experience any irritation or burning sensation on my scalp.

When the application of the cream was done, he clings wrap my head and started the UFO looking machine - a warming machine. It was set to 15mins so I was casually sipping my tea and surfing on my phone. When the time is up, they blow-dried my hair again before ironing it.

The ironing is the last step to seal in the keratin into my hair. At this stage, I could see my hair becoming beautiful, silky, soft and healthy! I was amazed already. I couldn't wait till this is over to see the new Cinderella me.

To my surprise, I needed to rinse my hair after the ironing. I thought it was already perfect and even asked Shane why haha. Anyway, I enjoyed the head massage during the rinsing so I closed my eyes wishing it would not be over so soon. I seriously would come back again just to have my hair wash!

Shane was soo nice! He trimmed my hair (he knew I didn't have a cut for some time lol from looking at my overly grown hair during the hair inspection haha). He said this is normal, usually, for the finishing look, they would trim a bit.

    RECAP: BEFORE CINDERELLA TREATMENT

my hair before the treatment: Can join Lion King show

my hair after the treatment, I feel like a Kpop artist

    My verdict:
I don't need to put it into words! Just watch my video to see the after results. My hair was light, airy, healthy, glowing (shining!), so smooth and silky. It has been restored to its baby glory days. So tamed, you won't believe the before and after pictures. Like seriously? Did I have such awful looking hair?! OMG!!! This is really a Cinderella hairy-tale story! Leekaja is my fairy godmother for sure now.

Would I do this again? I would save up for this and await their next promo if I need to. Between many normal in-salon hair treatments and leave-in hair treatments/masks you would buy, a one-time off that lasts for up to 3 months could be time and $$, saver. Not to forget the first-class service + beautiful lush environment at Leekaja Robinsons, Four Seasons!

Update: After a month and plenty of hair wash, my hair is still looking smooth and fine. I have Dyson hairdryer at home so the level of heat-blow drying is not as bad as a normal hairdryer. I am hoping this lasts till my birthday.

    Cinderella Hair Care
Shane advised me to use the right hair care for post-Cinderella care and maintenance. It would help in prolonging the effects. I knew that a typical keratin treatment would last up to 3 months with good care and since this is a less offensive treatment, I really needed to invest in a good sulfate-free shampoo and stay away from swimming for a while (chlorine would destroy my Cinderella hair!).

    Show King Pod RM150/250g
    Korea's No.1 On-The-Go Treatment

At the cashier, I picked up the Show King Pod that Shane recommended to me as a moisture-locking treatment that I could use in place of a conditioner to care for my Cinderella hair. It helps strengthen hair follicles (to prevent hair loss) + natural shine + promote hair thickness. He said it's RM150 but currently, they're offering an RM150 cashback credit on any hair service with if I buy this. I totally love any good deals to come back again so this was a good buy!

I get back RM150 credits for my next hair wash or cut and live like a queen again for a few hours. The promotion is extended until the end of November and the credits last 2 months (pls double-check with them).

As part of your queen service, if you're unhappy with the service or it's not up to your expectation they have an 8-day customer satisfaction guarantee to come back for retouching within 8 days of your service (haircut, color, perming rebonding).

    • 8 Days Promise - An eight-day Satisfaction Guarantee for the customer who not satisfied with their hair services!

belif Rose Gemma Concentrate Oil Review

    10.14.2019

a rose oil to romance you off your skin

Self-care or self-love has been increasing topic these days if you notice. With everyone hurrying about their day with work, studies, parenting, adulting and just carrying out everyday life can take a toll on your mental. Take a chill pill, de-stress, go for a massage, escape with a holiday or a change of scenery - that helps. They say looking at the beach or ocean waters reduces stress (by a lot) but what happens when you can't get on Air Asia and do just that?

    You stay home and self-care.

One of the easiest ways is to do a skincare ritual. It could be anything, what you already have, or what would greatly inspire you to just drop 10kg off your shoulders.

For me, I love oils - essential oils. I think I have swap 80% off my skincare to oils over the years.

I love oils! It's my no.1 must-have in my beauty regime

I do write about them now and then, and I have a collection of over 60 essential oils at home including carrier oils. Carrier oils are oils that help carry the more potent oils like frankincense, clary sage, and lavender essential oils to name a few from the drop to your skin. It dilutes the potency (strength) of essential oil so it doesn't harm you. Yes, essential oils are potent (strong) that you're advised not to use them directly. There's a whole lot of information on the net about it if you want to get started on essential oils.

Today it's all about self-care at home, which is the most neglected of all. Home is where you can make time for yourself, no matter how busy you are. Twice a day, indulge in a mini pampering session just to relax both your skin and your soul.

I love to just put on slow sexy lounge jazz, diffuse my favorite oil into the air and have my man-slave *cough* I mean fiance give me a face massage. It's so relaxing and rich.

Rose Gemma Concentrate Oil = Radiance + Moisture + Smoothing

Just recently we got ourselves the belif Rose Gemma Concentrate Oil and that was exciting to me because you can hardly find a nice rose oil that's not overpowering! If I'm not mistaken, this is the only product made of oils apart from having essential oils as one of the ingredients like the prime infusion line.

This got me excited because I practically collect face oils / dry oils from brands I love. Rose oil happens to be one of my favorites because my favorite flowers are peonies and roses. I have risen perfume at home too but my olfactory is more skewed towards a lighter, natural, English rose scent.

Like most face oils in the market, they're multi-functional so you can reap not just 1 benefit but many benefits to a glowing complexion. Brands such as belif take their research and development seriously as their brand philosophy is not about putting nasties on your face. Take a step into their store and you'll see products label and mark to let you know what you're in for.

It feels like a lab right?
I must admit that I'm honestly, super lazy these days. I have taken a step towards being a minimalist, starting with my skincare because you know I have a ton at home. I am frankly, sick and tired of using everything on my face and I just want to keep it simple, clean and true. I have Marie Kondo my face.
And when I have a nice Saturday with the sun shining into my studio apartment and the light hits the spot just right. I take my "tools" and start deconstructing my beauty products into the inspirational elements they are made off. I hope it does help, my readers to feel a product via the eyes.

The belif Rose Gemma Concentrate Oil is a multi-functional dry oil suitable for any skin type. Dry oil does not mean the oil is dry or it's for dry skin. Dry oil gives you the benefit of oils but without the greasy, oily feeling. It's lightweight, fast-absorbing and non-greasy.
    • additive-free facial oil with real rose petals in it.
    • formulated with sunflower oil, camellia oil, sweet almond oil and more than 71% of natural oils which helps to keep skin moist
    • it has fresh rose petal scent and absorbs instantly into the skin without any stickiness.
    • It contains Vitamin C and Vitamin E that works as an anti-oxidant, and thus protects the skin external environment, prevents water loss, and makes skin smooth and radiant.

real roses petals + natural plant, seed and nut oils

I have sensitive skin so this did not irritate nor cause me any kind of discomfort. Lovely nourishing, free of nasties, has Vitamin C and Vitamin E anti-oxidant rich ingredients packed into a rose color bottle with an equally lovely scent of English roses. Great for spa, the bath, your diffuser, aromatherapy, self-care, beauty care, scalp, cuticle the list goes on.

I'll rate this a 4/5. Reserving the last star should they even consider bringing down the price point for the Malaysian market. While I do love the oil, I wish it could be more affordable to the masses to enjoy the pleasures of using this oil.

    My Keto Weight Loss Journey

    9.29.2019

10 kg difference - see it in the jeans!

I've been meaning to put a post on how I lost a total of 23kg from the time I was heaviest 83kg (2018) until the best numbers I have ever seen in a long time on the scale - 60kg (2019). It started with cutting down on sugary drinks and increasing more wellness activity until the day I started keto. In the past, I have successfully lost 10kg and 7kg on two separate occasions in 20 days. You can read about it here 2014 10kg lost and 2013 7kg lost.

I guess what’s a better time to share about my weight loss journey (by turning keto) than now? @ reason is because I could’ve died if I didn’t. This pic here is a difference of 5 months before and after. Yeap I was serious, because it’s serious. . . My years of enjoying the good life, eating & drinking whatever I want anytime of the day was just a heart attack waiting to happen. I didn’t take care of myself well on top of the stress I have. . . I know it’s hard to realise all this does affect us, to realise every food and drink u put into your mouth does and will affect you either now or to come. You think you’re young so it won’t happen to you. This is just “old ppl” sickness and I’m good for now. It won’t happen to me. Yes that’s what I thought and perhaps that’s the denial everyone is on. . . Ever since my doctor told me I could die, I have regretted not taking care of my health. It’s still not too late now, and even more so for everyone regardless of age. . . This is the era of diabetes, hypertension, kidney failure, stroke and heart attacks. The food we eat needs to be scrutinised just like the ingredients you check on your beauty products. Hidden sugar, carbs and high calorie food is this generations silent killer. You can say “it’s my life” I do what I want but u know that’s just you not wanting to allow yourself the chance to live a better and healthier life. . . It’s been 6 months since I quit smoking, quit coca cola, and reduced refine sugar, carbs and process food. I’ve never felt better, more energetic, more focus, and feel healthier than before. I’ve lost nearly 20kg the first 3 months on keto, and maintaining this for the next 3 months. It’s not easy. . . The struggle is real, the change is hard bcoz “they” (the F&B industry) has paint a pic that it’s normal to eat, drink and be merry. You’ll only realise this when it’s too late. Early screening / detection is the prevention. Your second chance before it happens. . . . #dontstentinmyway @ihealmedical

By now you know I have tried almost everything related to weight loss and shared most of the reviews on my blog. Of course, it always yoyos back and that's not because the program failed or the bounce backs are worst. The answer is simple, it's because I went back to my old ways.

Let's be honest, no weight loss program will help if we don't change the way we consume our food. You can't blame it on the programs when you're back to indulging yourself on carbs and sugar. It's not easy staying off that delicious path because we live in the best food region of the world Asia where food is abundance - fried, grilled, steam or bake.

Our love for sugar and carbs in this generation is the real evil.

But of course, it's hard to say no. We have been conditioned to think it's normal to consume a large amount of refined sugar and carbs in our diet. From being brainwash to eating breakfast, three meals to five meals a day to having desserts after every meal. Are those normal? According to Dr. Jason Fung from the Obesity Code and The Diabetes Code, no that's not normal.

Highly recommended reading if you want to change the way you eat.

this pic was taken during my Sabah trip to celebrate Baby G's birthday
and while there, I met up with local beauty blogger Myra
I looked like a stuffed turkey here

The food conspiracy is all over the internet. From sugar to carbs to fast food and milk. Google to read. The plague these days are bubble milk or boba craze which has gotten us into a frenzy and self-denial of why shouldn't we indulge in such pleasures of life when it's widely advertised. The Ministry of Health isn't putting a stop on it, so why should we?

I know it's easy to deny yourself the path to good health, I myself am under denial most of the time. It is when I learned I could've died from the very food I eat that I started taking my weight seriously (I am still struggling with temptations).

    the Keto eating guide
going wholefoods is easy and better for health

It was the day I quit the loves of my life - sugar, carbs, and late-night eating. Too late because my body has already suffered from it. I have been feeling less of myself in the past 2 years with health issues such as inflammation, lack of energy, weak immune system (so I get sick easily), my period was irregular (so I thought I was pre-menopausing), yeast infections, skin infections and so on.

Tired of the issues, I went to see the doctor and after a blood check, my doctor told me I could've died. I don't want to share the details because I am not ready but I want to say it woke me up and I made the decision to change.

The first step was to lose all that toxic weight. The second was to change the way I eat. The third was to increase activity even though I hated exercising so much.

there are many versions of Keto online
(it's healthy fats and not bad fats that u should eat)

I scour the internet to find how I could do that. I found Dr. Jason Fung and read his books. I learned about the benefits of intermittent fasting from him and staying on a low-carb, whole foods diet. Then I found out about Keto from Thomas DeLaure dub the Keto guru on youtube.

watch this to get started on what's Keto

There are many versions of Keto on the net, but I find Thomas's the most accurate about Keto. I highly recommend watching his videos to understand what's Keto and also intermittent fasting. His videos can sometimes be too much because he doesn't want to miss the science of why. It can get boring, yes but it is helpful.

    What is Keto Diet?

The keto diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet. It lowers blood sugar and insulin levels, and shifts the body’s metabolism away from carbs and towards fat and ketones. - Healthline.com

    keto food list to refer

I started the Keto diet on 11th March 2019. I did not document nor take photographs to track my weight loss journey because I didn't know it would affect me that much. All I wanted is to feel better, be healthier and lose all that toxic weight.

The first month, I lost 10kg
    The second month, about 5kg
The third month about another 3kg

I have a few pictures to show of my keto weight loss journey and how I have evolved from being on a low-carb diet. The first three months I was quite serious about losing a chunk of toxic weight. It was also the easiest and hardest for me to do. Easiest being I was serious because, at that time, I was really unhealthy and facing issues. Hardest was because I went cold turkey on day 1 and decided to take a risk to subject my body to an extreme change, I was weak for the first week and slept early for that period of time (by 9pm).

The second week I became keto-adapted (fat adapted) and it was easier to be on intermittent fasting which I started to experiment on 16:8 and then 18:6 and then became OMAD (one meal a day). The third month, if I remember correctly I started extended fasting (June) for 3 days straight with just water and coffee. It was then that I reach my goal weight of 60kg.

use this guide the next time u go out grocery shopping

I had turned to whole foods for the first month and only allowing myself chicken breasts as a luxury at that time. I ate a lot of green leafy vegetables, cook soup and meal prep at home. I ate my dinner early (like 5 - 6pm) and then going to massage at night to help detox or improve my lymphatic flow. I drink lots of water every day. Now I have started to enjoy black coffee and ice americanos during lunchtime when I'm fasting.

It's not hard just google keto foods and look at the articles and images even recipes that you can find. Just follow. It's always leafy vegs, lean meat proteins such as chicken breasts, any kind of berries (I take strawberries and kiwi).

The trick is to just avoid refined sugar (sugary drinks, desserts, etc) and refined carbs (rice, noodles, pasta, bread, potatoes, etc). That will help you lose toxic weight fast. It will also help with water retention as carbs retain water and make you bloated and tired all the time. Sugar is addictive so cut it down (will be tough) try to drink lemon water which helps!

By nearly 3 months, I decided to allow myself the luxury of eating hot pot because Yee Ming wanted to eat Haidilao at Sunway Pyramid. It was at that time, I started to relax and allow myself more variety and luxury of dining out. On weekdays I would maintain my salads with protein and weekends I would keto cheat with hot pot (protein with vegs) or Korean bbq (bbq protein with vegs).

These items had become my must-haves during this weight loss journey. Just click on the links to go to the shop. If you're new to iHerb do use my link bcoz I would get 10% reward to deduct my purchases. This helps me to continue buying my stuff!
    1. Carb Blockers
Which I order from iHerb (US website) which gives really good pricing on supplements, health products etc. I buy Irwin's Natural Carb Blocker. They're made from white kidney beans which helps to stop the enzymes that break down complex carb into simple carbs for the body to absorb and turn into glucose.
    2. Atkins Chocolate (Keto friendly)
I also buy my Atkins chocolate from here (low carb, zero - low sugar). I would recommend the peanut butter cups, caramel chew nut, and caramel chocolate nut bar.
    3. Zero Calorie Rice/Noodle/Kuey teow)
Shirataki or "Miracle Noodles" that's made of glucomannan fiber (konjac plant root). Go shopee to buy. These help to supplement your craving for carbs because they're soluble fiber and helps make you feel and satisfy your craving for noodles or rice. Because it's 97% water, it's best eaten wet/soup which gives u a near likeness of what you're missing out in real carbs.

The kuey teow is definitely a pho-substitute if you're ordering Super Saigon just opt out for noodles and use konjac kuew teow instead.

For the konjac rice, they are beautiful with soups instead of fry as rice. They can't beat real rice because they don't have that starchy body. They're more like rubbery Japanese rice.
    4. Probiotics
Helps to improve your gut health and digestion. We don't think much of it but it does help because if your stomach good bacteria is good, it helps to break down food and clear rubbish out.
    5. Biotin
If you're going low carb/keto, I would advise you to start taking biotin so you don't lose your hair in the process.
    6. Vitamin B / Supplements
Make sure you're getting your minerals and vitamins for your body. Extreme changes in diet or a cut down from usual dietary habits may affect your body. You'll lack certain nutrients normally found so vitamins help. Get multi-vits from anywhere.
    7. Milk Thistle
If you've a fatty liver or a prone to it after a blood work check. You can get Milk Thistle to help. Just read about it, it's recommended by doctors to start taking milk thistles and probiotics for health.
    8. Fish Oil
For better heart health, lowering triglycerides level (bad fat/cholesterol).
    9. Braggs Amino Acids (soy sauce replacement)
Soy sauce is high in sodium, swapping it for amino acids or coconut amino acids can help lower the sodium intake greatly. It makes a great marinade as well. If you love coriander, garlic, chili and soy sauce like me, make your own sauce at home to eat with your keto meals. iHerb has coconut amino acids in original, teriyaki and garlic.
    10. Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar
There are many sources on ACV being a powerful support for lowering blood sugar level, aiding in weight loss and etc. Google to read. I dislike the smell but many keto gurus swear by it.  I try not to take this while on fasting because it makes me hungry instead of helping me to be full.

There are many keto supplements that you can take. I would recommend doing some reading on what you need and don't need as it's also depending on what you're eating e.g if you don't like salmon, avocados, do take fish oil. Magnesium? It's from our leafy greens, nuts, avocados. These help as well to counter keto flu. Read five keto supplements or google to find out about keto supplements here.

What's Keto Flu? It's carb flu. This happens when you start keto somewhat like a carb withdrawal symptom. It's flu-like symptoms. I experience this after a week on keto. I had flu, cough, etc. I counter with an increase of fluids (water) and taking magnesium and potassium-rich food/supplements. It will soon pass don't worry!

it's all about research and preparation. If you don't understand what's keto, you will be confused about what to eat.

    My Keto Weight Loss Journey
(I only started to notice the changes after a month)

the first time I realize I looked different

I started feeling better and more energy

a dress that I couldn't fit in suddenly I could wear it!
(10 years I kept this dress hoping one day I could wear it)

people started noticing I was getting better

the time I could fit into UK8 size jeans! OMG

started enjoying life again but still monitoring my food

finally, reach my goal weight 60kg after 3 months
(but I look too haggard & have loose skin)

started exercising more by walking a lot

went to Penang to celebrate & cheated for 5 days
(fell ill on the last day so I have become carb-sensitive)

hair loss affecting me at this point

started gaining 3kg-5kg to look better
(also bcoz hair loss is scary)

28th Sept at Butterfly Coachella party tagbooth
maintaining my weight between 63kg - 65kg right now

Soon I was receiving messages from friends and family about my weight loss. My auntie was a particular concern as she texted me that I was already at a good weight and shouldn't lose anymore. She cautions me against looking haggard which I will not hide, yes I did look haggard at one point now from losing 18kg in 3 months.

I also started losing my hair because I did not take biotin or Vitamin B supplements which those on Ketogenic diet would need. So this is one lesson I learned and I lost a lot of hair at this point for 2 months. It scared me. I would run my hair with my fingers and hair would just come off.

My doctor advised me to start taking in more protein and supplements such as Biotin so I did. Now my hair loss is under control after a month on Biotin and antioxidant supplements.

    going healthy is expensive

Now going Keto for the first 3 months is good or every now and then. Maintaining it would be even better if you can. Not everyone can be on Keto long because you'll soon get bored of the limitation in variety unless you're creative and innovative on your meal preps. Going Keto or any kind of healthy diet is also expensive so here's a Keto budget food guide you can refer to. If you can make your own salads at home, grill, bake, steam your proteins, buy whole foods, cook soups or broths, stay away from delicious but unhealthy hawker food, fast food and processed food (which is cheap yes.. but seriously not good for your health) is the best.

I could go on and on but I would recommend if you're interested in starting Keto, you need to:

    1. Have the right mindset so you can reach your goal easily.
    2. Go wholefoods (means more natural clean food like vegetables, fruits, nuts).
    3. Avoid carbs - rice, noodles, pasta, bread, pizza, kuey teow
    4. Drink lots of water
    5. Drink lemon water, coffee and green tea
    6. Take vitamin supplements and biotin
    7. Take probiotics
    8. Take carb blockers if you're keto-cheating
    9. Dark chocolate to satisfy your cravings
    10. Walk every day if possible whenever, wherever.

I hope my basic tips help, please watch Thomas Delauer and read Dr. Jason Fung's Obesity Code (Can buy from shopee for RM1 e-book).

P.S: I am still struggling to lose weight. It's not easy to stay away from yummy food in Malaysia. I wish everyone the best in losing toxic weight and feeling better and becoming healthier. Looking better after losing weight is a bonus from all this! GAMBATE!
