    let's talk about relationships

This June would be the mark of our 2nd year together, as a couple, partners in crime and companions in life. He says I'm his number 1 girl in his life (after his mom) while I say, he's the love of my life. Coming from different ethnicity background, somehow we complete each other like two pieces of jigsaw puzzle. It was fate that brought us together, a love story that you wouldn't believe me if I told you. A lonely traveler who lost his wallet at the airport and the lonely single gal fresh out from an unhappy relationship. Friends would ask why him? And here's my answer:

    because he:
    1. loves me for who I am
    2. makes me laugh (especially important when you're having a bad day)
    3. is honest with me (when interrogated)
    4. respects me as an individual
    5. easy to get along
a far cry from the imaginary bf list I wrote back in school:
    1. rich
    2. handsome
    3. big house
    4. big car
    5. 10 dogs and 20 cats
See? Hahaha (kidding). Well, life is no fairy tales am I right? The girl who finishes school and the girl who has eaten her fair share of salt in life are two different people now. The salt of life, made me realized how important are the little things in a relationship - a hug, a kiss, a smile. I was raised by my mom and dad, both divorced when I was young. I would say, I didn't have the luxury of seeing my parents holding hands, kissing each other (cheeks!) or join them as "lamp post" on romantic travels. I did have that luxury watching American movies (haha).

same same but different, so what?

Then, I met the man who made me smile. He's not Malaysian but we still hit it off. Can I say it's not easy finding that someone whom you can be comfortable with? I always thought it would be harder to get along with an "Ang moh" because of our cultural and background differences. That went out the window the first day we talked and shared about our lives. We started living together as a couple, and soon I learned what it means to be loved. He never fails to give me a kiss a day, a hug when I come back from work and cuddles whenever he feels like it. Where I am now, I am truly happy and if I can say it, I might have found my soul mate. We were meant for each other! (right?).

when you were younger, I bet you took a lot of quizzes!

it was as if they could predict the future

okay maybe not this last quiz

Just the other day on his birthday trip to Tanjong Jara Resort, Terengganu, I decided to take The Relationship Quiz to see if their answers were "He's The One" or "Run For Your Life". Interestingly, it wasn't that kind of quiz. The kind that I was accustomed to from reading female magazines. You know the arrow kind or the ones with handsome guys holding hearts on the quiz. The answers didn't lead to Gerard Butler or Takashi Kaneshiro (yes I'm that old).

take the quiz here to find out what relationship type you're in!

It was more serious, no thanks to Nicholas who introduced me to it. It was a relationship quiz with proper surveys done by Prudential, fully loaded with a relationship index to match. Statistics were shown too with comparisons, highlights, explanations on what makes a relationship important. I took a glance over and it's a whopping 44-page report. From being in a relationship to having children, parents, friends and so on. There's something to read and understand how it all affects our lives.

    honeymooners, we are *giggles*

So jeng jeng jeng, guess what my relationship quiz says? I'm surprised too because it says we're still in the HONEYMOON stage! I think that just explains the countless of "honeymoon" trips we've taken as a couple because we both love to travel, eat and just shower each other with cuddles silly. But what happens after the honeymoon stage is over? Things become serious and the love goggles come off. So what makes and breaks a relationship now?

the many stages in a relationship

Prudential did a pretty good job gathering information in their report with the question "How can we make our relationship stronger in Malaysia?" in their 2016 Prudential Relationship Index (PRI) to understand the state of personal relationships in Malaysia and throughout Asia. These include relationships with partners, children, parents, friends and relatives. A score of 100 on the PRI means that a person’s primary relationship delivers 100% of what they want from that relationship.

here's the video for a quick intro to what the
Prudential Relationship Index 2016 is all about

Malaysia is ranked 5 in the Prudential Relationship Index
(Vietnam the highest, China is the lowest)

the survey done with 10 countries

Getting down to what makes relationship important, Prudential set out on a mission in a region-wide survey with 5,000 conversations going on in ten countries - Malaysia, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam. The 2016 Prudential Relationship Index is the result of our region-wide research.

The Index measures, via a numerical score, how satisfied people are with their primary relationships and suggests what can be done to improve them. Primary relationships include partners, children, family, and friends. Amazing insights into what makes relationships work and how best to protect them is shared all on www.prudentialrelationshipindex.com

in life, it all comes down to the people who matters to us the most

the four pillars of a relationship

Malaysia did not too bad, coming in 5th with the score of 71/100. It means that, on average, the primary relationships Malaysians fulfill 71 percent of their relationship needs in terms of people’s satisfaction with their personal relationships. Here are some interesting facts from the report that I'd like to show you! Which also comes back to my question of what makes or breaks a relationship after the "romance/honeymoon" period?

What are some things we may not know about Malaysians?
    • Couples in Malaysia frequently express their love for each other.
    • Both parents and children in Malaysia look out for one another financially.
    • Malaysians are largely positive about technology, but not addicted to it.
What are the keys to relationship success in Malaysia?
    • Be easy to get along with
    • Respect each other’s individuality
    • Be honest
    • Stand up for one another
    • Have strengths that complement each other
So I hope this post helps you identify where you are right now in your relationship by taking the Relationship Quiz and how to identify the key elements to a successful relationship after all the jazz is gone. To read the full report, download it from here.
