  • Day 1 - Bangkok, Land of Smiles

    9.09.2008

I finally got down to blogging about my trip to the Land of Smiles, Bangkok. Upon touch down at the airport, we took a taxi to Starry Place, which is located in the heart of Bangkok. Initially we were placed at Bangkok City Inn, but Mr. Songphol (Manager of Ocean Holidays) upgraded us to Starry Place a service apartment! Why did he do that? for plenty of reasons which I will explain throughout my trip. FYI, we have the first 2 nights free and we extended 2 more nights making it a total of 5 Days 4 Nights stay in lovely Bangkok.

We were placed at the highest floor where our unit overlooks the city. I can see Baiyoke Sky from here (Thailand’s tallest and Bangkok’s most scenic hotel) & at night the building lights up beautifully. I spent many nights at the balcony looking out dreaming. I must say that this is definitely a bigger place, compare to a hotel room.

When I came out of my aparment to take a stroll down Rangnam Road, which I think should be rename to Bow Wow Street instead because wow there's a lot of doggies around here! big small and even a pack of them that roams around like gangsters outside my apartment. Do you think I paid enough protection money?

Actually it was quite a strategic place to be at. Starry Place is just behind 7-11 store which is so convenient! Plenty of taxis and hawker stalls here! I know why Mr. Songphol decided to put us here. We're at a place where we could go anywhere (Sky train is just a few walks away) food aplenty (restaurants, cafe, 7-11, yummy cheap street food) and actually one of Mr. Songphol's cafe is aruond here too! It's called Baan Bar.

    Baan Bar at night

We had our first Thai meal here at Baan Bar. It was lunch time and we were starving after checking into Starry Place. Baan Bar is a Irish Bar and they serve super thai food! Brick ordered Pad Thai while I took Chicken Chilli Basil with rice. I love spicy food! Btw the cafe manager came over to greet us, his name was James. Very friendly person, he's from Myammar married to a Thai woman and stayed here for 5 years. I was so shy as his boss Songphol told him to take good care of us and that we can dine for FREE at his cafe (and restaurant which I will tell you about later) oh and that tonight, dinner is on him.
omg a shopping mall nearby too!

I was told that this is the best spa in Bangkok
(it's daylight robbery I will tell u later on Day4)

After that we went to Patunam Market which is at Baiyoke Sky. Lots of wonderful street foods here! I can't believe they're so cheap, cheaper than Malaysia's night market! I heard at night there's more stalls and all kinds of weird food like crickets, grasshoppers, lizards etc! eeww..

It was going to rain and we panic! SO a kind Thai man flag down a Tuk-tuk for us. Boy I had to bargain with him just to get us back to Starry Place which is only a few blocks away! Taxi only cost us 40 bath to get here and this guy wants to charge me 80bath! (that's double!). I bargain with him using sign language and after several cuts, agreed for 50bath. Take note, it goes by a ride not by pax! so 50 bath is like rm5 to get us both back to our apartment. Exciting and dangerous this Tuk-tuks! wind blowing and there's no seat belt! We reach our apartment within 10 minutes.

While walking to our apartment, there's this thai guy selling BBQ chicken wings! omg the aroma! we just couldn't stop ourselves from buying. Guess what? only 10bath each! (that's rm1). We bought a couple and headed to our apartment to feast on them and slept until dinner time. Well, I'll blog about the dinner tomorrow because it's already 1am now. Need some sleep!

Hope you like my day so far in Bangkok, Land of Smiles.

stay tune for dinner in the heart of Bangkok tomorrow..
